Interviews

To gain a better understanding of the situation bi-racial people in Hong Kong experience, we interviewed two people who were half european and half south-asian to gain their perspective. 

From the interview we hope to gain insight into the exposure and effect of language and culture has on a bi-racial person and how they perceive their own identity. 

Disclaimer: All participants agreed to be interviewed and any question they were uncomfortable with answering are omitted. 

Below are the designed questions:

Jethro Clarke, Half British half Filipino

James Hui, Half French, half Chinese (Hong Kong)

 

 

Introductory Questions:
1. Can you introduce yourself? (Name, nationality, how many years you lived in Hong Kong)
2. What language is your mother tongue and how many do you know? Is this the same as your parents?
3. What languages do you hear most often around you? (i.e what language do your parents speak around you? Friends? 
4. How did you learn to speak the languages you speak?

 

Hong Kong related Questions:
1. As someone who has lived in Hong Kong, do you consider yourself a Hong Konger? Why or why not? 
2. Do you think Hong Kong's culture promotes or ignores your nationalities culture and language? If so how?

 

Identity related questions:
1. Which nationality do you identify with more? If so why?
2. How do you feel your language and nationality connects to your identity? 
3. When communicating with people of your nationality is it difficult or easy? If so/not why?
4. What is one aspect of your identity that directly relates to your nationality?
5. What do you think hinders you from understanding or identifying with your nationality?
